3D Weather Map: live 3D radar for the United States

3D Weather Map shows live US weather radar in three dimensions. Instead of a flat radar picture you see each thunderstorm as a 3D shape: how tall it grows, where its heaviest rain and hail cores sit, and how it changes from scan to scan. You can fly into any storm, follow it as it moves, and play back the last 24 hours.

What you can do

• 3D radar: every storm across the continental US drawn in 3D, from 33 radar heights up to 19 km.
• 3D storm tracking: click a storm to follow it live, with its 3D shape updating as new radar arrives.
• Rotation and warnings: rotating storms (radar-detected rotation) plus National Weather Service tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings, with pop-up alerts for new ones.
• Wind: animated surface wind from NOAA's HRRR model.
• History: play back the last hour, 3 hours or 24 hours.

What is a 3D weather map?

A weather map that shows the atmosphere in three dimensions. Weather radar actually scans storms at many heights; most radar maps flatten that into one picture. This map keeps the height, so you can see a storm's structure.

Where does the data come from?

Radar comes from NOAA's MRMS (Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor) system, which merges the national network of NEXRAD weather radars into one 3D grid. Warnings come from the National Weather Service, and wind from NOAA's HRRR model.

How often does it update?

Every 4 to 10 minutes during the day, hourly overnight, and straight away when a new tornado or severe thunderstorm warning is issued.

Is this an official warning source?

No. Always follow your local National Weather Service office and local alerts for safety decisions.

Who makes it?

It's a hobby project by one person who isn't a meteorologist, built on public NOAA data. It isn't affiliated with or endorsed by NOAA or the National Weather Service.

When will it be available?

It's in closed beta. The public launch is expected in spring 2027, in time for storm season.

Does it work on phones?

Yes, in a recent browser on a phone, tablet or computer. It needs WebGL 2.
